Link building is not an easy task; it is as tough as making a website is easy. Putting up a website does not need a lot of work but making the site work and create a niche market for yourself in the internet community can really take some hard work. When you make a website you want it to be seen by people. People search for things they want on the major search engines hence, if you want your site to be seen by the maximum number of people you want it at least in the first page of results when someone searches for a relevant keyword. Now, the question arises, how do you put your site in the top results of a search engine page? Search engines assign positions to the websites that they show in their results based on the ranks they assign them.

The major search engines have different criterions for assigning ranking to website. These formulae are not available to us, they are closely guarded secrets. If you want “search engine optimisation” then you want to get as many backlinks as possible. Backlinks can be seen as other web site or pages directly linking to your website. They can be looked upon as referrals in the general sense of the word. There are many ways to create backlinks; the seo industry is a multimillion dollar industry and it growing. However, there is one question that remains in the mind of anyone who has just started to make a search engine optimisation strategy- quality or quantity.

Earlier when google did not have a very sophisticated formula for ranking, strategies were designed from the view of being noticed by bots. You had to focus on quantity and you could build it any way possible. Link purchasing, multiple links swapping etc were all legit and all used to work. Therefore it did not matter where you posted your link, you just needed to have a lot of them everywhere and that was easy. However, things have changed now and since google has developed its page ranking formula and started using the concept of the “reasonable surfer”, the focus has shifted to providing quality web content to users.

Writing articles for article directories is the best example of providing quality web content to users. It is not that quantity link building does not work. The reasons why experts today stress on writing articles and providing useful web content is that google is looking for websites that are useful and relevant to users. When you provide quality web content there are chances of people finding your article useful and sharing it with others. This will give you more backlinks. However, when you are posting hundreds of backlinks anywhere on the web, it is difficult to manage exactly where your links are being put. If they end up on a blacklisted site then it can be detrimental to the reputation of your website. Hence, quantity link building should be handled with care.
